Welcome
Anyone exploring Islam, feeling drawn to it in their heart, or who has decided to enter Islam, is welcome to approach our mosque. At no point in this process is anyone rushed or pressured; every step is taken entirely of your own free will. Our door is also always open if you would simply like to have a calm conversation with our imam first, ask your questions and learn about the process.
How Does One Enter Islam?
Entering Islam takes place by sincerely believing in the oneness of Allah and that the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) is His messenger, and declaring this with the tongue — that is, by pronouncing the shahada (declaration of faith). There is no other requirement beyond this — no special instruction, examination or waiting period is required.
- Is there any pressure? No. The decision is entirely yours; our imam will also ask you this directly, before witnesses, during the ceremony.
- Will my family or community be informed? No. The information you share is kept confidential and shared only with the minimum number of authorised people (our imam, the Counsellor’s office) — see our Privacy Policy.
- Do I need to come alone? 2 witnesses must be present at the ceremony with you; if you do not know anyone, we will help you find witnesses from among our congregation.
How Does the Conversion Ceremony Work?
The ceremony takes place in a warm and simple atmosphere at our mosque, accompanied by our imam:
- A short recitation from the Qur’an and the reading of its meaning.
- A brief address from our imam (the belief in the oneness of God, the chain of prophets, and the meaning of the shahada).
- Before witnesses, you are asked the question of free will — this step is never skipped.
- The shahada is repeated together.
- Takbir and congratulations.
- Registration in the Conversion Register and presentation of the Conversion Certificate.
- Where possible, the gift of a Qur’an with a translation in your language and a book introducing Islam.
For French-speaking candidates, the ceremony can also be conducted in French; the shahada is taught to you syllable by syllable in its original Arabic form.
What Is the Conversion Certificate?
The Conversion Certificate (EK-9) is a bilingual (Turkish/English) document issued by the Presidency of Religious Affairs of Turkey (Diyanet), officially recording your declaration of entering Islam and the details of the ceremony. It bears your signature, the signatures of the two witnesses, and the signature of the Diyanet official (the Counsellor for Social Affairs of the T.R. Embassy in Brussels).
- It is free of charge. No fee whatsoever is requested from you for this process.
- Where is it used? It is known that this certificate is used as the “Certificate of Conversion” requested by Saudi Arabian authorities for Hajj/Umrah visa applications. It may also be presented if requested for other official procedures; however, since acceptance criteria vary by institution, we recommend confirming with the relevant institution beforehand if you have a specific intended use.
- How is it issued? A copy printed on glossy paper is presented to you the same day, following the ceremony; the official archival copy is sent to the Counsellor for Social Affairs of the T.R. Embassy in Brussels for registration.
The online form you complete on this site constitutes a preliminary application/request for the official EK-9; the official document is only issued following the ceremony at our mosque and approval by the Counsellor’s office.
Documents Required
Please bring the following with you for your application and the ceremony:
- A copy of your identity card or passport (front and back for an identity card).
- 1 passport-style photo.
- The completed application form / letter of request (you may use the online form below).
- Your explicit GDPR consent (signed within the form).
- 2 witnesses who will accompany you.
Process and Duration
The process is free of charge and works as follows: first you submit your application (using the online form if you wish), and then a ceremony date is agreed with our mosque. On the day of the ceremony, the copy of the Conversion Certificate printed on glossy paper is presented to you the same day. For the certificate’s official archival registration, a copy is sent to the Counsellor for Social Affairs of the T.R. Embassy in Brussels; there is no fixed period set out in law for how long this official registration will take — in practice it may take a few weeks. We cannot commit to an exact number of days; our imam will keep you informed if needed.
After Conversion — Support
You are not left alone after the ceremony:
- A Qur’an with a translation in your language and a basic book of Islamic teachings is given as a gift (where possible).
- You are welcome to take part in the talks, lessons and congregational programmes at our mosque.
- If you wish to change your name, guidance can be offered to you — this is not obligatory, and is entirely a matter of personal choice.
Our mosque aims to develop, in the coming period, an orientation/mentorship programme and regular follow-up for our newly Muslim brothers and sisters; work on this is still at an early stage and does not currently represent a formal, guaranteed service.
