Our History
The association that sustains Marche-en-Famenne Ulu Mosque was registered on 19 December 1979. Our mosque building was itself opened for service in 1986; the marble plaque on the entrance façade reads “Marche en Famenne Mosquée Ulu Camii – 1986”, alongside the Turkish flag, the Diyanet emblem and the Belgian flag. In 2026 we mark the 47th anniversary of our association’s founding and the 40th anniversary of our mosque building’s service.
Since 25 December 2023, our association’s official French name has been registered as Association Diyanet Mosquée Ulu Camii de Marche en Famenne (abbreviated A.D.M.U.C.M.F.). Among our congregation and in everyday use, we are known simply as “Marche-en-Famenne Ulu Mosque”.
Our Affiliation with the Diyanet Foundation of Belgium
Our mosque operates under the Diyanet Foundation of Belgium (BDV), founded in 1982. Our imam is appointed by the Presidency of Religious Affairs of Turkey and coordinated through the Counsellor for Social Affairs within the BDV. This affiliation ensures that our worship and religious services are carried out in keeping with the tradition of the Turkish Diyanet, in a regular and continuous manner.
Our Official Status
Our mosque is a place of worship officially recognised (communauté locale reconnue) by the Walloon Region. Under this recognised status, alongside our association (ASBL), a separate public-law body known as the “comité”, established under the Walloon Government decree (AGW) of 13 October 2005, also takes part in the running of our mosque.
Our Services
Alongside worship, our mosque offers a wide range of services for the religious and social needs of our community:
- The five daily prayers and the Friday sermon
- The Ulu Camii Qur’an School
- Ramadan programmes and iftar organisation
- Eid and holy-night (kandil) programmes
- Sacrifice by proxy (Kurban) organisation
- Funeral prayers and death announcements (washing, transfer and burial are carried out by the Diyanet Foundation of Belgium’s Funeral Fund)
- Services for those newly discovering or embracing Islam (conversion)
- Coordination of requests for Turkish-language lessons
- Knowledge competitions

Our Governance
Our association is run by a general assembly and a board of directors elected by it. The board includes a president, vice-president, secretary, treasurer and members; a separate audit board also exists. Our association’s management carries out the mosque’s administrative and financial affairs with transparency and continuity.
Our latest general assembly met on 9 January 2026, at which our board of directors was renewed.
A Mosque in Our Neighbourhood
Located in Marche-en-Famenne, in the province of Luxembourg, our mosque is a place open not only to our Muslim community of Turkish origin, but to everyone living in our region. We invite our neighbours, and anyone wishing to learn about Islam and the life of our mosque, to visit us; your questions are always welcome.
